FAU to Host Events in Honor of Black History Month

Florida Atlantic University will celebrate Black History Month with a series of events for students, staff and faculty at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Broward campuses.


Florida Atlantic University will celebrate Black History Month with a series of events for students, staff and faculty from Tuesday, Feb. 1 through Monday, Feb. 28 at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Broward campuses. The events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Each year, FAU observes National Black History Month by celebrating the history and contributions of its African American/Black Diaspora communities. The 2022 National Black History Month theme is “Black Health and Wellness.”

Black History Month BBQ

Tuesday, Feb. 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. 

BBQ Pits, Boca Raton campus

The BBQ event will kick off Black History Month and is hosted by the Black Student Union and Multicultural Programming. For more information, contact Mudrine Cesar at president.faubsu1970@gmail.com.

Trivia: Black History Month Edition

Wednesday, Feb. 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Poolside, Dania Beach campus

What is black history? Participate in a fun trivia game and learn about black culture, community and history. Win prizes and enjoy free refrigerio. For more information, contact Nyobee McCall at nmccall2020@fau.edu.

BSU Black History Month Meeting 

Thursday, Feb. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m.  

Student Union, Boca Raton campus

Black Girl Magic

Friday, Feb. 4 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Student Union, Boca Raton campus

Disney and DEI 

Tuesday, Feb. 8 from 5 to 6 p.m.  

Grand Palm Room, Student Union, Boca Raton campus

Representatives from the Disney College Program will discuss the company’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Students will also have an opportunity to learn about the Disney College Program and professional internship opportunities. The event is open to FAU students and alumni. Stereotypes of the Black Male Misunderstood: Étnico Navigations ad Resistance Narratives of the Black Male Collegian. 

Friday, Feb. 18 from 1 to 2 p.m.

In this presentation, Myron Davis, Ph.D., discusses his research on the experiences of black male scholars in higher education to provide an in-depth understanding of the aspects that facilitated or impeded their desire to persist to degree completion. The findings of his research identify how to create equitable academic environments and mentoring strategies to facilitate black male persistence. “100 Black Men in Suits” was a social media challenge in 2016 to fight stereotypes of black men.
